What is security?
So what is security? Well, Wikipedia defines security as:
The word security is derived from the Ancient Greek “Se-Cura” and literally translates to “without fear”. ‘Security’ is therefore the state of being secure, or the actions employed to achieve that state, i.e. to be secure is to be without fear of harm.
I guess my definition would be a little different. I’ll be talking mostly about commercial security and I would define commercial security as protecting people, equipment and real estate that make up a business or building. From here on out when I say security, it will mean commercial security.
There are 5 basic means used to provide security: security guards; video surveillance (or CCTV or Closed Circuit Television); access control (or card access); fire alarms and burglar alarms. Since I’ve never worked much with fire alarms, I won’t be covering that system. Also, I’ve never been a security guard so I won’t be talking much about that subject either. My experience has mostly been with video surveillance and access control and a little bit with burglar alarms.
