Labeling your power sources and avoid getting shocked!

Every now and then while working on access control or camera equipment, you’ll run across a bad power supply. Some power supplies merely plug into the wall and are fairly easy to replace. Supplies such as Altronix usually have high voltage electrical wired directly to them.  It’s rather difficult to replace the supply if you can’t turn the high voltage off to the supply. Sometimes if there is only one electrical panel and the circuit breakers are marked, it can be accomplished. That’s usually not the case. A lot of the time, you’ll see an entire wall of electrical panels with no indication of your circuit breaker. What makes the job easier is a label near the power supply indicating which electrical panel and which circuit breaker supplies your power supply. This seems like a pretty easy thing to do but it’s rarely done.  While you are installing the supply new or replacing it, create a label and  stick it on the supply. A simple label maker in your tool box will make servicing much easier in the future.
